Dr. Michael Bilof

Meet Dr. Michael Bilof

Dr. Bilof began his career as a vascular surgeon where he continuously saw chronically ill patients suffering from type 2 diabetes and other medical problems often seen in bariatric patients (high blood pressure, heart disease etc.). As a vascular surgeon, Dr. Bilof was frustrated by his inability to truly alter the course of these disease processes. When he found out that bariatric surgery could literally reverse diabetes (getting patients off insulin and other diabetic medications) he knew he had found his calling. If we can ‘cure’ diabetes, then patients won’t develop the chronic and debilitating vascular problems in the first place! The ultimate preventive medicine!

In 2003, upon the urging of his wife, Dr. Bilof left his successful vascular practice and retrained in bariatrics, something unheard of at the time and even today. In April 2007, he founded his own practice, Garden State Bariatrics.

A Leader Among His Peers

Dr. Bilof is a leader among his peers. His fellow bariatric surgeons in New Jersey chose him as President of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) from 2014-2016. During his career he has been designated as a Center of Excellence surgeon, been named Top Surgeon by the Consumers’ Research Council of America, held the position of Section Chief for the Center of Excellence Bariatric Program at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center as well as Deborah Heart and Lung Center and is a multiple (11) year winner of the NJ Monthly Top Doc award.

Dr. Bilof is also frequently recognized by his patients. He has been repeatedly honored in the ‘I Love My Doc campaign’ at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and has received the Patient Choice Award. But for Dr. Bilof, the most valuable part of his job is the extraordinary impact bariatric surgery has had in his patients’ lives. Their health is improved, and their life is reclaimed.
