Last month I did a brief overview here of the medical research on the new ‘wonder weight loss drugs’ that are on the market. In case you did not read it or didn’t know there are new ‘wonder drugs’ in our midst, the 2 drugs are Semaglutide (brand name Wegovy/Ozempic) and Tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro).
The take home message from the research literature is that these drugs are effective for a significant number of the patients who take them (at least half in most of the studies) and, more importantly, they are relatively safe. Since we are a surgical practice, in the past, we have been somewhat hesitant to prescribe weight loss medicines. However, when the facts change one must change their mind and the fact is these drugs (as just mentioned) are safe and relatively effective and so deserve a place in a practice that is focused on weight loss.
Introducing Our Medical Weight Loss Program

One thing I would like to mention at the outset is that this Medical Weight Loss program will not be covered by insurance (unlike our bariatric surgery options, which can be covered by insurance). The Medical Weight Loss option will be a cash pay program with a monthly subscription fee for the medication.
